Ganesh Utsav Festival: Mumbai Offers Insurance to Ganeshotsav Revelers

Ganesh Utsav Celebration: The Mumbai civic agency Wednesday announced a scheme to provide insurance and medical assistance to participants in next month's 11-day Ganeshotsav festival, an official said here.

Mayor Sunil Prabhu said that any participant injured during the Ganesh festivities would be provided free medical treatment up to Rs.15,000 in any civic hospital.

However, in case of fatalities during the Ganesha festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation would give a compensation of Rs.150,000 to the family of the victim, he said.

The decision follows an appeal last month by Prabhu to Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte seeking insurance cover for the millions of participants who throng the 'Dahi-Handi' and Ganesh Utsav celebrations in Mumbai.

Prabhu urged Kunte to consider the proposal on "humanitarian ground" in view of the disasters that could take place during the two festivals.

While 'Dahi-Handi' falls this Friday (Aug 10), this year's 11-day Ganesh Utsav will start Sep 19, attracting millions of people besides domestic and foreign tourists.

During these festivals, there is a risk of casualties or accidents involving revelers and volunteers which can leave maimed.

'Dahi-Handi' is celebrated with tall human pyramids of boys and girls, and Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi sees participation of lakhs of youth, civil and police officials, especially during the celebrations and the Ganesha idol immersion ceremonies or Ganesh visarjan on the fifth, seventh and 11th day.

The 'Dahi-Handi' also attracts some international groups besides locals who vie with one another to build the tallest human pyramids and bag the prizes worth crores of rupees each year.

Last year, the celebrations left over 200 injured, including some seriously, and there were two fatalities in 2010.

For Ganesh Utsav, individual trusts and organisations provide heavy insurance cover to idols of the elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesh.

However, barring a few trusts, there is little or no insurance cover provided to millions of devotees and lakhs of volunteers during the Ganesh Chaturhti festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2012: This year Vinayak Chaturthi falls on 19th September & Ananta Chaturdashi falls on 29th September, 2012.

Ganesh Utsav Celebrations in Vadodara | Photos

 Happy Ganesh Utsav!

Ganesh Utsav or Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular Hindu festival of India. Ganesh Utsav marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva & Parvati who is the God of good fortune, prosperity, wisdom, knowledge & remover of obstacles.

Every year the festival falls around late August – early September and it is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). This year Ganesh Utsav falls on 19th September, 2012.

Ganesh Utsav is celebrated with great devotion & enthusiasm all over the state of India. Friends, below are the photos of Ganesh Utsav Celebrations & Ganpati decorations in Vadodara. Lets take a look!

Most popular legend about the birth of Lord Ganesha is that Parvati is said to have created him from clay to protect her unknown to her husband, Lord Shiva. As Ganesha sits on guard at his mother’s home, Lord Shiva comes home but is not allowed in by Ganesha. In a fit of anger, Shiva chops of Ganesha’s head. When goddess Parvati learns of her son’s loss, she is distraught and demands her husband bring her son back to life. The lord orders his men to find any sleeping being with a head facing north. His men see an elephant and instantly do as instructed. Thus is Ganesh reborn, but this time with the head of an elephant.

Ganesha Utsav is celebrated over a period of 10 or 12 days. The festival begins with the placing of beautifully crafted Ganesha idols in homes or grand Pandals and for 10 days these Ganesha idols are worshipped with full faith. Ganesha Aarti is to be done at morning & evening regularly, prasad of Modak is placed before the Ganesha Murti and then Modak Prasad is distributed among the devotees who are present in Ganesh Puja.

On the last day of Ganesh Utsav i.e on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period) or Ganesha Visarjan, these Ganesha idols are taken in a procession for visarjan or immersion, to the nearby river, lake or sea.

As the idols are immersed in water, it is believed that any misfortunes that may afflict the family are also washed away. This year Ananta Chaturdasi is on September 29, 2012.

Hope! all Lord Ganesha devotees will like the collection of photos of Ganpati decorations for Ganesh Utsav Celebrations and information about Ganesh Utsav. By sharing this post with your Facebook   friends show your full faith towards God Ganesha.
